The great pen master James Joyce has published a series of short stories in a collection he named Dubliners. Published in 1914, the book received critical acclaims only later on, for its amazing depiction of the simple life of people in the middle and lower-middle class in Ireland.During that period of time, there was a strong nationalist movement where the identity of Irish people was fervently searched for. However, the young James Joyce had little interest in these movements. He loved and hated Dublin. The story opens with a paragraph where he writes that there was nothing to do in Dublin. If one wanted to do something in life and succeed, he would have to leave the city.Joyce himself left the city only to carry it within his heart. He then proceeded to write these beautiful yet simple writings about the simplicity, hope and despair of people in the lower and middle classes. Then book opens with death and closes with one as well. But there is also life between, where people are searching for love, success or far-away places. One can wonder why humans live; what are they after? Are they doomed to search for a purpose throughout their lifetimes without finding any?James Joyce creates an accurate if not slightly surrealistic picture of life in Dublin with its bleak background, grey buildings and small people caring for small things. He makes use of hyperboles to depict the people who go on with their lives, craving for money, lusting for love or carrying on with their petty crimes.Anyone who enjoyed James Joyce's other novels, as well as anyone wishing to immerse in a world long gone, would certainly find Dubliners an excellent read. .
